Cute Space - Daniel Balen+Shanjida Shamma

Progress Images from yesterday - Mostly explored materials. Here the bubbles are made up of smaller, green jelly-like material to give it the impression of softness.

This is a night rendering of the same.

Here I started thinking about what you said and articulating the surface of each disk to create texture. Also I changed the material inside the disk from a green ooze to what. The reason was because Shamma and I were taliking about creating a pond in the park but one that you can walk one. So we thought of the volume filled with water so that one can play in water without getting wet. Then I took this idea and combined it with your suggestion of surface articulation and created HAIRY WATER.
Here we explored the idea of manipulating the material to create an artificial possibility - BOX WATER. By the way the square are in SubD. I had to make many lines to keep the edges sharp.
Here is the idea within the park with other fake ponds and such. Finer articulation of the surface caused my Render to crash so I stopped here.
Then today after reading your comments and doing some thing we came back to what is the main idea of this project - cute(ness). We selected a bunny to represent this idea and made a rough exploration of what makes it cute (or anything else). Generally something is cute if it is small, round (smooth edges) and there is a juxtaposition of scales. The head is the biggest followed by the body then then the appendages are very small in comparison. A baby is a good example of this.

Then we took the basic idea and created a primitive cute thing (rabbit without ears to make it more general). Next the pieces were separated and finally recombined following the same rules but with more repetition. The rule which I mean is that there is usually one very large thing, then a much smaller one and even smaller ones. Each successive decrease in scale reinforces the cutes of the larger and of the whole.
So, this is where we are right now. The next step is to create a cute space from these groupings (this is the reason for the people in the rendering)

My Dada Nightmares - Deborah Kaiser- Valentina De Leon

We are still working on the render settings in order to create the sensation of these concave nests to be covered in a soft silicone like material, filled with water, as opposed to the frozen black sea sensation we would like the pavement to have.

We intend to make a photomontage once satisfied with the renders, in order for the image to take a morecontrast realistic yet contrasting edge.

As shown in the images, we created very geomestrical nests for our monsters, in order for them not to compete with their geometries, and differentiate and categorize the playground into different areas, with different uses for various ages.

The illuminatred balls will serve not only as lighting devices, but also as puffs and meeting points, sewing the different areas of the playground.

We are also experimenting with the nests materials, differentiating the areas with different sensorial arrousing textures, fur, sand, water, rubber spikes, silicone balls.

Shanjida Shamma+Daniel Balean - Progress Images

Today we began a new concept which is in the same line of thought as the previous. We have one element which is "cute". From our research cute objects are spherical and have juxtapositions of very large and very small. Therefore we are using a sphere which is squished. This object is repeated in different scales across the surface of the park. Horizontally they become walking surfaces, jumping surfaces, sitting objects. Vertically they become climbing objects. In addition there are spherical objects that are stretched and spread out across the site which at different scales have different uses for different ages. The small ones are for children to sit on, push or ride on. The larger are geared more for adults with TV screens for watching the news or listening to music. The idea of fineness is presented here in whole to whole relationships. So the sphere becomes the all purpose object in the park. The use only depends on scale and material. In this way the park can be enjoyed by all ages.

Chewing gum Playground, Stefania Solaro

After the site change, I didn’t feel the need to be in an enclosed space anymore, like the one the Cocoon generates in first place. I preferred to do some kind of structure that can interact with the preexisting buildings, but still flexible enough in order to be positioned and attached in any other site. I took the “chewing gum” as a source of inspiration for it, as well as the examples of “cute things” posted o Thursday. The chewing gum is a element that all ages feel identified with. And it’s flexibility and stickiness are very playful characteristics that I consider appropriate to be included in a playground structure. The playground is composed by two levels. The ground level gives the possibility to play with the “balloons” in the floor, which will be made of a reflecting material, like a latex or thin glossy plastic, in order to reflect the upper level. I want to incorporate different colors and even smells, like when you have a bunch of gums and you try to figure out which one is your favorite. You can jump from one to other or just sit over them. The visitors can play with some balls, for the moment there are just balls, that hang from the ceiling. In addition they can play in the swing sector. I want to make them feel attracted to the upper level, with the help of some colorful toys that can be seen from the ground. The visitors can reach them by climbing the net in the center of the site, which is easily found by the red “tongue” as a vertical element which can also help them to go up. In the second level you can play with toys or just have a more exciting perspective. The way to go down is by slides made of the same fabric as the chewing gum net. I want to make a very soft ad safety ground to play in, and the materials responds to that characteristic. Even if this result is very different from my first attempts, I am still working on the mesh and the moire effects as well. The visitors have a very close and important relation with the esthetic of the structure. They are the ones who give life and dynamisms to the net generating different pressures when they walk over it. I will fix the overlap of the two nets and try some other and simplier pattern in order to get the moire effect better.

marysol - wudi- work in progress saturday

We are redoing the bump shape ( in the followings examples, the bumos are missing but they will be in the final design) trying to give more room to the bumps...

This is work in progress, so we are still missimg more tentacles , the bridge between them in order to give flat areas , and also in order to give the height to be able to climb.., the interaction between the 2 shapes becoming one...
Maybe the proportion of the tentacles is wrong..they should me more thick ...
an some of them will apperar from the ground in the "empty" areas.
And maybe they should be more going up interacting with the buildings...
And after the bridging , we will work more on the ground to accentuate the tension...

( of course, the white ground will be merge with the existing plot! so we will see only the bluish shapes emerging)

RENDERS APPROACHS:
We work with the old model in order to have an image of the "complete" space...
This are some ideas of frames and lights....

INTERIORS:
We begin to desgn the "interior" shell..the equipment is done with the tentacles bifurcating...

Anindita Leksono_Attawit Sotyom (working progress)

This is our new design, we still want to make something which is related with nature (flower). We made some equipments to play, some space covered by petals, different texture for each equipment, and more colorful. We want to make something playground fantasy......

Daniel Balean+Shanjida Samma - Progress

This is the concept for the project so far. It is whole to whole relationships that we are studying, as well as cuteness. For the idea of cute we selected the cuteest thing imaginable,.......a rabbit or bunny! With this cute unit we intend to build the park so it will be a park literally made of cuteness.

This is the overall organizational concept for the park.

The functions spread out from the park onto buildings and out onto the sidewalk.
